Equipment
Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction is Korea’s only major equipment supplier for nuclear power plants and boasts a high level of technology and manufacturing experience.
Nuclear reactor and internal structure
A nuclear reactor, a core element of a nuclear power plant, is designed for self-control and the maintenance of chain nuclear reactions, and makes use of heat energy from nuclear fission within the reactor. Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction provides reactor model APR1400, a 3rd-generation and Korean standard nuclear power plant, and the AP-1000 from Westinghouse to Korea, the U.S., the UAE, China and other countries.
A reactor vessel is designed to withstand high temperatures and high pressures in order to provide a space for containing nuclear fuel and chain reaction. It contains reactor internal components with a bottom head welded at the lower part of its cylindrical body.
The reactor vessel closure head assembly is a flanged hemispherical component bolted to the vessel by studs, nuts and washers to facilitate refueling and inspection.
Steam Generator
The steam generator converts the secondary feedwater into the saturated steam and supplies it to the turbine system, using the primary coolant that is heated while circulating the reactor core. The heat-transfer tubes inside the steam generator form a pressure boundary between the primary system, which is the reactor coolant system, and the secondary system, which is the turbine/generator system.
Nuclear Reactor Coolant Pump
A nuclear reactor coolant pump is installed at the primary system of the nuclear power plant. The large capacity vertical pump is a key part of the nuclear steam supply system and delivers the heat generated by nuclear reaction to the steam generator by compulsively circulating the high-temperature and high-pressure coolant.
Control Element Drive Mechanism
The CEDM (control element drive mechanism) is an electric device that controls the level of nuclear reaction at the nuclear core, by withdrawing, inserting, stopping, and dropping the control rod in the vertical direction inside the nuclear reactor, according to the operating signal received from the CEDM control system.
Pressurizer
The pressurizer acts as a surge tank that provides an expansion and contraction space for the reactor coolant during normal operation, and keeps the reactor coolant pressure constant using the spray nozzle at the top of the pressurizer and the heater at the bottom.
Integrated Head Assembly
Located at the top of a reactor, an integrated head assembly (IHA) lifts and transports both itself and the reactor vessel’s top cover simultaneously when reloading nuclear fuel, and cools the CEDM by forming a cooling air flow path to remove the heat generated by the CEDM
Nuclear Fuel Handling Equipment
Nuclear fuel handling equipment is used to transport and handle the nuclear fuel and the control element assembly in a nuclear power plant. It is composed of a nuclear refueling machine, spent fuel handling equipment, control element assembly change platform, fuel transfer equipment, a new fuel elevator, and control element assembly elevator. The equipment is operated under various control conditions set for the safe loading and removal of the nuclear fuel and the control element assembly.
Fuel Storage Rack
A fuel storage rack is a structure designed to store nuclear fuel used inside a power plant safely. It is composed of a new fuel storage rack and a spent fuel storage rack. The fuel storage rack keeps the temperature of nuclear fuel below a certain level by controlling the chain reaction of nuclear fuel and designing the coolant inflow, and protects nuclear fuel from external force such an earthquake.
Post-tensioning System of the Containment Building
The post-tensioning system of the containment building is a method of construction that applies internal stress to the nuclear reactor containment building in advance, in order to prevent the occurrence of tensile stress and deformation exceeding the allowable value for a concrete structure due to abnormal pressure inside the containment building. In this way, the post-tensioning system maintains the structural integrity of the reactor containment building under design basis accident conditions, such as loss of coolant.
Heat Exchanger
A heat exchanger is a kind of pressure vessel that is used to transfer heat energy from a high-temperature fluid to a low-temperature fluid without allowing any direct contact between the two fluids. Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction designs, manufactures, and supplies various tubular heat exchangers – such as shutdown cooling heat exchangers, regenerative heat exchangers, and letdown heat exchangers – that are installed in nuclear power plants.
Pressure Vessels and Tanks
A pressure vessel is used to maintain and prevent the pressure of gas or fluid exceeding the atmospheric pressure inside the vessel. Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction designs, manufactures, and supplies various types of pressure vessels – such as safety injection tanks, volume control tanks, and reactor drain tanks – that are installed in nuclear power plants.
Instrumentation and Control (I&C) System
An instrumentation and control (I&C) system ensures the safe operation of a power plant and performs the function of preventing various types of accidents.
Supply of Total Nuclear Power Plant I&C Package
The Man-Machine Interface System (MMIS) corresponds to the brain and neural network of the nuclear power plant, and manages the operation, control, monitoring, instrumentation, and safety functions in an integrated manner in the event of an emergency. It is an instrumentation and control (I&C) system that ensures the safe operation of a nuclear power plant and prevents accidents as the fusion of digital and human engineering technology by using a state-of-the-art computer and controller. Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has successfully localized the MMIS facility, which is a representative safety-critical field in which safety and reliability are the main priority, and has supplied it to Shin Hanul Units 1 and 2. The system will also be supplied to Shin Kori plant units 5 and 6, and worldwide marketing campaigns aimed at overseas nuclear power plants are also under way.

Provision of Device for Replacement, and Construction Work
Doosan manufactures OPR-1000/APR1400 replacement equipment for Westinghouse and Framatome, and also supplies it to customers at 扑克王app官方home and in the U.S. and China, in order to prevent primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) of alloy 600 materials – which are widely applied to the control element drive mechanism (CEDM/CRDM) nozzle of the reactor vessel head and welding part, and the heat-transfer pipes of the steam generator – due to the long-term operation of a nuclear power plant.
Doosan designs, manufactures, and supplies high-density fuel racks which are used to store and transport spent fuel during operation; casks for storing and transporting spent nuclear fuel; feeders that are replaced when deteriorated due to long-term operation; studs, nuts and washers; gaskets; measurement instrument parts; and CPTS stands.
Replacement for Repair and Non-Destructive Testing
Doosan conducts design, construction work documentation, and on-site construction work for the replacement & repair work in the event of failure due to deterioration and breakdown during nuclear power plant operation. Doosan establishes the process of replacement & repair work according to the applied technical standards (ASME, KEPIC, etc.) required for on-site construction, and develops the procedure documents, quality control documents, qualification certification of welders, welding procedure specifications (WPS) and welding procedure qualification record (QPR) to conduct the replacement & repair work for the equipment in question.
Doosan conducts qualification and procedure qualification testing of non-destructive testers to run a non-destructive test of on-site construction work, which is required for replacement & repair work for the equipment in question. Doosan has secured the KPD (Korean Performance Demonstration) and Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) Performance Demonstration (PD) to run a test, which are non-destructive test qualifications for the Control Element Drive Mechanism (CEDM/CRDM) and the Reactor Coolant System (RCS), for which special conditions are required concerning the qualification, procedure, and equipment verification of the non-destructive tester.
Engineering Technology Support
Doosan provides engineering services required for the operation and maintenance of nuclear power plants, based on its experience in the replacement, maintenance and performance improvement of the major equipment of nuclear power plants. As regards engineering services, Doosan conducts the Primary Water Stress Corrosion Cracking (PWSCC) evaluation of alloy 600, seismic performance assessment, stress data calculation, and tube plugging level upward of the steam generator heat-transfer pipe, by assessing the crack growth rate and welding residual stress.
R&D
Unlike nuclear power plants that are under construction, manual work cannot be performed at fully operational nuclear power plants due to interference when performing replacement & repair work and running a non-destructive test due to installed equipment, structures, piping, and radiation exposure. Therefore, replacement & repair work and non-destructive tests are carried out by developing the equipment and work procedures through technology development. Doosan is contributing to the integrity of fully operational nuclear power plants by developing and applying various proprietary technologies, such as a preventive maintenance technology for the nozzle of the Control Element Drive Mechanism (CEDM/CRDM); canopy seal repair and non-destructive testing technology; a half- nozzle repair technology; a remote thickness testing and repair technology for the containment building’s liner plate; anti-seismic gap overlay welding of the containment building and a non-destructive testing technology; a non-destructive testing technology of the sampling nozzle of the reactor cooling loop; a reactor lower head peening technology; a steam generator water chamber repair technology; and a heat-transfer extraction and welded-plugging technology for the steam generator.
